Co-Curricular:
Spiritual: Students participate in integral ways in the religious
and spiritual activities of the school. Students serve as lectors and altar
servers at school liturgies, in preparing and presenting “Spirituality Day”,
in retreats, and in special liturgies, such as the May Crowning, Student
Council inauguration, Second Grade Communion Breakfast, and Eighth Grade
Graduation.
Athletics: Holy Family School hosts several sports teams: varsity
and junior varsity basketball teams (boys and girls), girls’ softball, and
co-ed track. Beginning in grade three, students are eligible to
participate. The varsity boys’ and girls’ basketball teams participate
annually in a benefit tournament. A Sports Award Banquet is held each spring
to honor players and coaches. Many students choose to participate in
township programs, including soccer, lacrosse, and baseball.
Clubs: At Holy Family School, club programs expand to meet student
interests. Current club offerings are: Forensics, Chess, Lit Wits (literary
club), Yearbook, Photography, and the Academic Competition Team. The
D.A.R.E. program involves students in activities that encourage self-esteem,
drug and alcohol refusal, and non-violence.
Leadership: The encouragement and development of student leadership
is an important school goal. The Elections of Student Council Officers and
Class Representatives occur early in September, and these student body
leaders sponsor several events, activities, and service projects during the
school year. These include middle school dances, school-wide Olympics,
Activity Nights, food and clothing drives, and dress-down days for
charitable causes. More than twenty Holy Family students are Distinguished
Alumni of the Junior National Young Leaders Conference, held annually in
Washington, D.C.
Music: Students participate in a Christmas Concert, a Spring
Concert, and a Variety Show to demonstrate vocal abilities. They also visit
assisted living and nursing facilities to perform for the residents.
Students who take instrumental music at the school perform in a Spring
Recital, showcasing their talents.
Contests: Students who choose to do so enter a wide variety of
contests to improve their skills in areas of interest. Contests are
sponsored by national, state, diocesan, or local organizations. They
include poster, essay, art, and poetry. Student efforts often are
successful, and many have been published, honored at luncheons, or received
awards.
Service:
Students at all grade levels are active in Church, school, borough,
national, and state service projects. Prominent among these are the Saint
Jude’s Math-a-thon, the Salvation Army’s Soup Kitchen, the Florham Park Food
Bank, the Holy Childhood Missions, and the Bridges Lunches for the
Homeless.
Special Events:
The planning and presentation of special school events often involves
collaborative efforts among teachers, students, and parents. These events
celebrate student achievements, educational values, student-family sharing,
and school spirit, to name a few. Highlights of each school year are:
School Academic Fair, Catholic Schools Week, Pre-K Daddy Day, Book Fair,
Santa’s Workshop, Pep Rallies, Field Day, and the Bunny Breakfast.
Students in grade eight enjoy a sequence of special events during their
final year. These include being “buddies” to the kindergarten class,
serving as tour guides during the school’s Open House, a ceremony at Mass to
receive their Class Year Pins, a trip to New York City to see a Broadway
play, high school visitations, class trips, performing a Shakespeare play
for the students, a Breakfast sponsored by grade seven, Class Night dinner
and dancing, and the Graduation Mass and Commencement Exercises. |
